'Joshua' Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2009
'Joshua' Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2009

Joshua is the first name of one of my earliest ancestors in the Barossa Valley. It is also the name of my youngest nephew, and son of my business partner, Michael Page. This fusion of young and old means the name 'Joshua' perfectly characterizes this wine.

Joshua is made from Grenache, mataro and shiraz harvested from vineyards with up to 80 years of heritage in the Barossa Valley. It is an age old style, made famous in the Rhone valley.

We have, however, crafted this wine to retain it's youth and vibrancy, to demonstrate what well maintained, old vine barossa Grenache is all about. It is a wine that displays copious amounts of fresh red berry fruits and dusty tobacco leaf, without the intrusion of oak influence. A splash of mataro adds to the earthy complexity, whilst a little shiraz is used for structure and weight.

The ripe tannins of the Grenache are gently supportive, without being intrusive.

This is a wine designed to enjoy immediately that will cellar well for at least five years.

What The Critics Said

"The 2005 Teusner Joshua received unanimous acclaim. (Sophie) Otton loved the "black cherry fruit and rose/violet floral characters" of this grenache mataro shiraz, while (Peter) Forrestal was attracted by the "fragrance and the fruit pastille and blackberry jam flavours." 95 points.
Peter Forrestal - Gourmet Traveller Wine

"Cheeky little Barosadeutscher! Priceless grenache, mataro and shiraz from prehistoric vines supply the fragrant, cordial blood. Kym Teusner wires 'em up for his Frankenstein business and zap! We got another Joshua lurching around in the year of it's assembly. Beaujolais would surrender if this ever came over the hill. Try it with cajun-style (blackened) KI free range chook. 91 points"
Philip White - The Advertiser Food & Wine

"A completely unoaked blend of mostly old vine Barossan Grenache (65%) and Mataro, with (10%) shiraz to finish it off. It is so good it makes you wonder about oak itself. With fruit as good as this oak can only lessen it.
Spice, raspberries and minerals and lots and lots of earth and aniseed savoury deliciousness, it packs a punch and carries long too, the minerally spice ringing out through the aftertaste.
This is the kind of earthwine the Barossa has long-since promised but seldom delivers. It's warm with alcohol, but within the style it works. At under 25 bucks it's compelling value. Drink 2005 - 2008. 93 points"
