  • PLEASURABLE NEWS

I kicked off Teusner Wines 20 something years ago. When Barossa Shiraz was the fashion of the day. The nation’s go to red drink. Boatloads of it exported to the four corners of the known universe.

Grenache was a dirty word. Mataro entirely unknown.

Naturally, being a man of style and not a follower of fashion, my first wines were Grenache Mataro blends. Albeit with Shiraz in a supporting role. Lesser lights in the eyes of the wine fashionistas, old vine Grenache and Mataro were – and still are – my true love. Superior beings…even to the mighty Barossa Shiraz.

Fast forward to 2022, and Grenache and Mataro are modern day Barossa superstars. From just a handful of wines a few decades back, Barossa winemakers are pumping out hit after hit. What was old, has become new!

That makes me smile…as does chalking up a couple of 95 point ratings from Huon Hooke for the latest vintage releases of Joshua and Avatar. The two wines that first carried my name all those years ago. Hard earned praise from one of the big names in Australian wine writing. He is lavish with his words – this also makes me smile.

Joshua Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2021
“Deep, dark red/purple colour, with a smoky toasty-barrel oak aroma overlying ripe dark berries, graphite and spices. It’s medium to full-bodied and has a trace of tannin bitterness, which it has the concentration and ageing potential to overcome. Very good intensity and persistence. A serious GSM.” 95 points, Huon Hooke. The Real Review

Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2020
“Full red colour with a tint of purple, the bouquet shows charry-smoky, cold-ash aromas at first, revealing spiced berries as it aired. The wine is very rich and dense, full-bodied and concentrated with lashings of supple tannins and a long carry augmented by some alcohol warmth. Luscious, full-flavoured and almost opulent.” 95 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
