Gentleman Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Barossa Shiraz holds uber celebrity status, meaning Cabernet Sauvignon is often overlooked. Hugely underrated, there’s a stack I’d be happy to put on the tasting bench for the challenge. Gentleman leads the way with structural power and fruit elegance. Seems the critics agree with each vintage scoring highly.

Barossa Shiraz holds uber celebrity status, meaning Cabernet Sauvignon is often overlooked. It’s hugely under-rated and there’s a stack I’d be happy to put on the tasting bench to challenge that notion…
The unique parcel in this wine originates from David Forrest’s vineyard high up in the Eden Valley. At around 400 metres above sea level, one of the highest points in the Barossa region, this vineyard produces truly exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon – indeed some of the best I have had the pleasure to work with. It’s pretty tough country up there and the lean bony soils keep the yields low and the berries small….hallmarks of flavour intensity. To create a slightly richer style, I decided from the 2014 vintage to introduce a parcel of Barossa Valley Cabernet from the Riebke’svineyards at Ebenezer to the blend…and I’m very happy with the result. The Barossa Valley component provides structure and power, a great partner for the classic Cabernet elegance and a sweet cassis fruit core of the Eden Valley fruit.
The Eden Valley fruit takes the lead in the wine…plenty of lifted notes and blue fruits, creating a really elegant wine that has real energy about it. The Barossa Valley fruit gives the wine lovely rich dark black fruits…but the delicious savoury tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon still shine through, making this such a bloody delicious drink! Here’s to the unwavering dedication of blokes like ‘Spog’ Forrest. A true gentleman of the Barossa.”

“If you’ve ever enjoyed a bottle of Teusner’s The Gentleman cabernet in the past, then you’ll enjoy this 2020 release.
It’s 100% true to its established style, and it over-delivers at that. It’s awash with dark berried fruit, it’s lifted with vanilla and violet notes, and it feels both juicy through its core and dry through its finish. Toasty vanilla oak plays a clear role but the fruit bounds on through it. Yes, it’s good.”

“98/2% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz; vines up to 25 yo; matured 12 months in old French oak barriques. Classic Teusner fruit: glossy, juicy, accurate and enticing. Varietal, too – packed with mulberries, blackberries, a leaf of sage and a considerable dose of joy! Dark colour, fine-grained tannins and a generous dollop of classy dark chocolate French oak. The only question is whether to drink now or hold for a few years. You can’t lose, either way.”
